National Education – Guardians of the Nation先锋

In recent years, the Education Bureau has been actively promoting National Education and National Security Education in schools, emphasising a “multiple approaches, working together” model to build students’ national awareness and sense of national identity. However, many frontline educators report that traditional talks, display boards, and worksheets often become one-way delivery, making it hard for students to truly connect—while teachers also face heavy pressure from activity design and KPI reporting.

The “Guardians of the Nation先锋” programme is a professional solution designed to address these school pain points.

That’s why we’ve broken away from the traditional framework and proudly launched the **“Guardians of the Nation先锋: Dongjiang Column Hong Kong–Kowloon Brigade Immersive Experience Programme”. This is by no means a one-off, disposable activity—it is a sustainable, cross-curricular learning journey**. Centred on the real heroic stories of the local Hong Kong anti-Japanese history of the “Dongjiang Column Hong Kong–Kowloon Independent Brigade,” we designed the programme in strict alignment with the Education Bureau’s “Hong Kong National Security Education Curriculum Framework” and “Values Education Curriculum Framework.” We turn abstract national concepts and values education into an immersive, real-world historical mission students can take part in.

By combining a professional indoor wargame venue (using safe Jelly Guns or airsoft) with on-campus sessions, students work in teams within a simulated 1940s occupied Hong Kong setting to carry out guerrilla missions such as “Secret Mass Rescue” and “Defence of the Position.” Through sweat and teamwork, they **personally experience the Education Bureau’s priority values—“perseverance,” “a sense of responsibility,” “law-abiding,” and “national identity”**. During the programme, students also create a “National Education project display board” or an “activity recap video.” These original student outputs can be used directly as strong evidence for the school’s “National Education Annual Report” submission to the Education Bureau, perfectly meeting administrative documentation and school-based outcomes requirements.

Aligned with the Education Bureau framework, deepening priority values

The programme content is precisely aligned with the Education Bureau’s National Education indicators. By telling the true history of the Dongjiang Column’s anti-Japanese resistance in Hong Kong and its rescue of patriots, it strengthens students’ understanding of national history and their “national identity.” At the same time, through rigorous tactical rules and teamwork, it develops core values such as “perseverance,” “a sense of responsibility,” “empathy,” and “law-abiding” in a hands-on way.

Tangible learning outcomes that make EDB KPIs easy to deliver

We understand the pressure teachers face with administrative reporting. In the final stage, we guide students through post-game reflection and have them work in groups to produce a “Dongjiang Column history project display board” or an “activity recap video.” These high-quality learning outputs can be kept for on-campus display, becoming the most convincing tangible evidence and highlight when the school submits its annual “National Education Work Plan and Annual Report” to the Education Bureau.

Immersive real-scene missions that spark maximum learning motivation

No more dull rote memorisation—we turn the history textbook into a real experience. In a professional indoor wargame arena, students gear up and become guerrilla fighters, moving through scenarios such as “Secret Mass Rescue” and “Defence of the Position.” Through highly interactive, real-scene puzzles and tactical execution, students learn history in a deeply engaging atmosphere and appreciate the value of peace.

A three-part continuous design to ensure lasting learning impact

To meet the Education Bureau’s expectations for “continuous learning,” the programme is delivered in three stages: **Stage 1** On-campus historical briefing and equipment safety introduction; **Stage 2** Venue-based real-scene tactical mission; **Stage 3** On-campus post-game debriefing and outcome conversion. This end-to-end, multi-week schedule ensures historical knowledge and character education are fully absorbed and deepened.

A perfect example of cross-curricular integration (Cross-Curricular)

This programme is an excellent example of “Life-wide Learning.” The content can be easily integrated into regular teaching across subjects, including senior secondary “Citizenship and Social Development” (aligned with topics on national development and Hong Kong’s relationship with the Mainland), junior secondary “Chinese History,” primary “General Studies / Science and Humanities,” and even “Physical Education” for fitness and leadership training—supporting schools in cross-curricular collaboration.

Strict, tiered safety system—our professional team gives schools peace of mind

While delivering an immersive experience, we put safety and discipline first. Equipment is strictly tiered by age (primary/junior secondary use painless Jelly Guns; senior secondary can opt for safe airsoft), and full-face protective masks are mandatory throughout. All instructors are first-aid certified, experienced in working with youth, and trained in the historical content. Together with comprehensive public liability insurance, this gives schools and parents 100% confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Safety is our top priority. We strictly tier equipment by age: primary and junior secondary students use painless, ultra-low-energy Jelly Guns, while senior secondary students can choose safe airsoft. During shooting and live-play segments, all students must wear the professional full-face protective mask (Full-face mask) we provide at all times to protect the eyes and face. We also run a strict safety rules assessment before the activity. Our professional instructors—who are first-aid certified—supervise throughout. If a student violates safety discipline, their participation will be suspended immediately. This is also an important part of developing the values of “law-abiding” and “self-discipline.”

This programme is by no means just a shooting game—it is **immersive historical role-play**. It is scripted around the real wartime history of the “Dongjiang Column Hong Kong–Kowloon Brigade,” with students taking on the roles of those who defended the country. Through the pre-activity “historical briefing” and the post-activity “reflection debriefing (Debriefing),” we guide students to connect setbacks and teamwork in the game with the hardships faced by earlier generations in rescuing patriots. This kind of first-hand experience is far more engaging than one-way lectures, and it effectively builds students’ “national pride,” “national identity,” and “perseverance,” aligning perfectly with the Education Bureau’s Values Education framework.

Our on-campus service is highly flexible. For Stage 1 “history introduction and basic tactical experience,” we only need your school’s hall or covered playground. We’ll bring inflatable bunkers for setup. For Stage 3 “post-game reflection and display board production,” a standard classroom is sufficient. We’ll adjust the format flexibly based on your school’s actual facilities.

Not at all. We understand teachers are extremely busy, so we provide a **one-stop on-campus and venue service**. From equipment transport, venue setup, historical briefing, safety supervision, to post-game reflection—everything is handled by our professional instructor team. Teachers only need to help book the venue and maintain basic order. In Stage 3, we also proactively support students in completing the display boards or short videos and hand the finished outputs directly to the teacher.

This is one of the programme’s biggest strengths. In Stage 3, we guide students to turn their live-play experience into tangible outputs (e.g., a Dongjiang Column history project display board, reflection worksheets, or an activity recap video). Together with the photos we take during the activity, schools can use these directly to write the **“National Education Work Plan and Annual Report”**, or upload them to the school website as a highlight of National Education work for the year.

The programme is designed for students from Primary 4 to Secondary 6. We adjust the depth of the historical content and the difficulty of tactical missions by year level. It’s also very suitable for female students. Historically, the Dongjiang Column included many female heroes (such as couriers in the Mass Rescue). In the missions, roles like communication, puzzle-solving, team command, and cover are equally important—so students of different personalities and genders can play to their strengths, build confidence, and develop leadership.
